13 ways to have profound and rare life experiences

13 ways to have profound and rare life experiences13 ways to have profound and rare life experiencesThe passion behind your goals is experience.Better than, What are you trying to accomplish? is, What are you trying to experience? What are you experiencingright this instance?Look around your physical environment. Is this the experience you want to be having?Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreResearch has found thatexperiences are more meaningfulthan material things. Experiences, then, are a better investment than stuff. As you apply the following strategies, you will have deeper, richer, and more powerful life experiences.1.Follow your gut, and logic willfollowWhat may initially seem crazy eventually becomes the fruchtwein logical and clear explanation. The process of trusting your intuitive voice allows you to weave together inspired work and even an inspired life. For instance, wh en discussing how he wrote the music for the Disney film,Beauty and the Beast, Alan Menken said you must follow you heart, throwing your feelings metaphorically out there and following those feelings. What you will find, Menken explains, is that logic and sense will naturally follow. In a similar way, Steve Jobs has said,You cant connect the dots looking forward you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. If you dont know what you want, youve probably made things too complex or tooreasonable.Listen to that voice within. Follow it, even if that means only taking one step forward. Eventually, youll be able to throw what you feel inside way out there, and watch as those impressions magneticallypull you forward.2.What youre really looking for is experiencesThe purpose of every goal is to have a particular experience or to create an experience for someone else.Rather than starting with a goal, ask yourself,What is the experience Im trying to have?Once you can answer this question, you can then determine effective means for having that experience. The Wright Brothers wanted to fly. Others have wanted to stand on Mount Everest, or have a happy and healthy family, or be a millionaire. Elon Musk wants to die on Mars. What is the experience youre trying to have?Is it love and acceptance? Is it feeling closer to God?Is it having a healthy and strong body?Is it more specific?Experiences are what make us human. They are what make life meaningful. You can put a price tag on many things in life, but certain experiences cant be bought with money.Certain experiences can only be had after years of hard work and directed focus. For example, you cant have the experience of running a successful company without committing to all involved in getting there. You cant have the experience of earning a Ph.D. without years of schooling. The greatest experiences in life are safeguarded from those who dont have the vision an d dedication to achieve them. You cant experience the thrill of being with the person you love if youre unwilling to put yourself out there. You cant have the experience of finishing a marathon if you dont train. What experiences would be worth a lifelong journey of commitment and discipline to achieve? What are you really trying to experience? How can you begin having those experiences now? What do you need to consistently be doing in order to have the greatest experiences you could possibly have in your life?Therein lies the path before you.3.Experiences are what open the door to greater experiencesJim Rohn, famed author and motivational speaker, tells the story of his turning point moment. When he was 25 years old, a young girl scout knocked on his door and asked if hed buy cookies. Embarrassed by the fact that he didnt have the two dollars to buy the cookies, he song to the girl.Weve recently bought some cookies to support your great organization,he said. The girl thanked him and lef t. When he shut the door behind her, he stood quietly in the entry way of his home. After a few sober moments in his thoughts, he told himself,I dont want to live like this anymore. And he really meant it. He was determined to figure out a better way to live his life.Shortly after having that experience, he was introduced to a man who would become his mentor for the next six years. This mentor changed Rohns life, and taught him the core principles Rohn used to become successful and help millions of other people become successful. The Tao Te Ching states,When the student is ready the teacher will appear.Jim Rohn believes he either wouldnt have been presented the experience of working with his mentor, or he wouldnt have recognized the opportunity had he elend first had his girl scout cookie experience. It wasthatexperience that facilitated great opportunities in his life. Because he was truly ready to change his life, he attracted the experiences that made it happen.Hence, Jim Rohn cons istently taught throughout his career,Success is elend to be pursued it is to be attracted by the person you become. After you have certain experiences that fundamentally change you as a person, you will attract greater people, opportunities, andexperiencesinto your life. Like attracts like.4.Certain experiences can only happen in a particular contextSome experiences require a particular context. For example, it sometimes takes getting away from all the noise and being out in nature to get personal clarity and insights. What is the context that would most naturally facilitate the experiences youre trying to have?Without question, every context or situation has an underlying agenda and culture. The energy of certain situations will directly oppose the experiences you are trying to have. If youre serious about your goals and values, you will keep yourself from those situations. You will also be mindful and proactive about being in the environments that will most likely facilitate the ex periences youre trying to create.5.Consistently ask yourself, Whats the greatest experience I could have in this situation?Within every situation, there is a range of possibilities. Most people live beneath those possibilities, even though they are completely available to them.A friend of mine recently told me of the experience she had during a workout competition. She was trying to do a rope-climb several times and smashed into a mental wall. It took everything in her to break through that wall and watch herself do something difficult. This experience wasmonumentalto her.On a simpler level, look around yourself right now. You are in a situation. Since you are reading these words, you are clearly looking at a screen. But what else is around you?How could you have the greatest possible experience in your present situation?Sometimes, it takes courage to create an amazing experience. For example, you may want to genuinely tell a family member how much you love and appreciate them. This level of vulnerably and honesty may seem risky to you. However, if you muster the strength andact, you can radicallyalter the situationfor better, and thus create a beautiful and powerful experience you may not have had.6.Be mindful of your situation and make modifications to improveitAgain, take a moment to be mindful of the environment around you. Its a good practice to do this regularly. Mindfulness, after all, is simply an awareness of your context. What are some slight modifications you can make to your environment to enhance the experience? This could be as simple as changing the music, tidying up, or expressing gratitude to those who are with you.If youre in the car with your lover, a simple modification could be putting your hand over the center console and holding their hand. A slight tweak to the situation unlocks the possibilities of a far differentexperience.7.Track what you think about and prayforA mans mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently cultivat ed or allowed to run wild but whether cultivated or neglected, it must, and will, bring forth. James AllenWhat do you consistently think about? Most people spend their energy focused onthe gapbetween where they are and want to be.I DONT have that book contract. My relationship ISNT going well.I WISH I was healthier. All of these thoughts compound the problem. What you focus on expands. Where your eye goes your body follows.Just as negative, people are often thinking about the very experiences theyre trying toavoid. From a psychological perspective, having anavoid-orientationstalls behavior, creating a paralysis by analysis. Conversely, having an approach-orientation activates behavior.Keep your eye on the experiences youre trying to create. That willpull you forwardtoward those experiences. You need to be in action, moving. Breakthrough rarely occurs without action.Does your mental and spiritual environment match the external environment youre trying to experience? An insightful practice is writing down what youre praying for on a daily basis. Doing this helps you discover how bland and broad your prayers probably are, allowing you to think and pray more concisely and specifically. Overtime, youll be able to look back on your entries and discover your consciously created reality.8.Have a few 90-minute Jam Sessions dailyResearch has found that employees are distracted from their workevery three minutes. To make matters worse, it takes approximately 23 minutes to get back to a state of focus after being distracted. If youre serious about achieving your goals, youll need to have creative and focused flow experiences, often. Flow is when you are fully immersed in a state of energized focus and enjoyment toward the activity youre doing.Hard work and long hours were the recipes for success in the 20th century. Deep focus and creativity are the recipe for success in the 21st century.Being in deep focused activity is like pushing yourself hard at the gym. After each workout , youll need to rest and recover. Hence, your brain can deeply focus for approximately90 minutesbefore it needs a break.Famed psychologist Anders Ericsson, who coined the term deliberate practice, found that the top performers all had similar practice characteristics They practiced in the morning They practiced for three sessions per day Each session was 90 minutes or less100 percent focused when working, 100 percent recovering when youre not. This is the recipe for making huge gains toward your goals. Ironically, most people will struggle to do this in our distraction-saturated world. If you can even get one 90-minute Jam Session per day, youll likely get more done than most people do in a week. Again, most people work in a perpetual state of distraction. Like sleeping but never getting to REM, most people work but never experience FLOW.9.Dont let other people steal your capitaltimeIn order to create flow-state experiences, youll need to cultivate environments that facilitate deep f ocus and creativity. For extreme sports athletes, those environments may be jumping-off cliffs or surfing waves. But what areyoutrying to experience and achieve?Again, look around you right now. You are in a context as we speak. Does your context activate or inhibit focus? How likely are you to have peak experiences and deep creativity in your current environment? One easy tweak is to completely remove your phone from your environment while you work. During your 90 minute Jam Sessions, you are completely unreachable. The world will be fine without you as you dive into flow, because when you emerge youll be able to give them your full self.If you dont protect what Jim Rohn calls your Capital Time another description of Jam Sessions undoubtedly other people will steal it away from you. You may have the best of intentions, but as T.S. Elliot has said,Most of the evil in this world is done by people with good intentions.I would add that most failures also occur despite good intentions. Com mitment is far more powerful than wishing.10.The cost of distraction is more than youthinkHow much is your time worth? If you want to make $250,000 per year, youll need to make approximately $150 per hour. If you want to make $125,000 per year, youll need to make approximately $75 per hour.Whatever your perceived value, its good to put a dollar amount on your time. This keeps your goals and daily behaviors in proper perspective.Watching 20 minutes of YouTube then, isnt exactly free. If your time is worth $150 per hour, then watching YouTube for 20 minutes actually cost you $50.Everything has a cost. The greatest cost is the future experiences you are sacrificing for momentary pleasure. Is watching YouTube videos worth the cost of having those highest of experiences?Distractions are not free The cost is enormous Distractions are costing you your time. They are also costing future time in the form of opportunity cost. You cant get lost time back.11.Have as many disconnected days as you canDarren Hardy, author ofThe Compound Effect, recommends another practice for experiencing high productivity. He calls this practice, disconnected days.Just as you should be completely disconnected during your 90 minute Jam Sessions, you should regularly scheduleentire dayswhere you are completely disconnected. No email. No phone. No social media.Just you, fully able to dive deep into the creative or restorative process.Without having a formal name for it, Ive had regular disconnected days for years. They are my most productive and some of my most meaningful days. These disconnected days need not be all about work. Actually, having disconnected days entirely for the purpose of rest and recovery is also essential. For instance, on Sundays, I dont use the internet at all, nor do I work. I use my Sundays for connecting deeper with my family and my spirituality.Darren Hardy recently said hes trying to have 150 disconnected days in 2016. Thats a great goal. And without question, it will yield enormous results.Unplug from the matrix. Do the work you truly want to do. Live your life. Build toward the dreams and goals that mean everything to you. Dont sacrifice that which matters most for that which matters least.12.You go as fast as those you are followingWho you follow determines where you get in life. If your leader isnt moving forward, youre not moving forward, because your results are a reflection of your leaders results.Usain Bolt, the worlds fastest runner, has broken many world records in recent history. Whats just as interesting, though, is that even those losing to Bolt are breaking world records. In other words, those who are losing to Bolt are running faster than anyone who has ever lived. How are they doing it?Theyre just trying to keep up with Bolt. Theyre able to go faster than they ever have because of who they are following. Indeed, the very fact that Bolt is in their environment completely changes their abilities.Being aware of the results of those youre f ollowing is just as important as being aware of your context. Who you follow ispart of your context.13.Doing less takescourageKill your darlings, kill your darlings, even when it breaks your egocentric little scribblers heart, kill your darlings. Stephen KingIts hard to cut trivial distractions things you know are holding you back from your life. Its even harder to cutgreat thingsfrom your life in order to focus on that which isbest. It takes courage to edit your life. As Steve Jobs has said,You have to pick carefully. Im actually as proud of the things we havent done as the things I have done. neuheit is saying no to 1,000 things.Quality is far more important than quantity. When Steve Jobs was with Pixar, he decided to do something revolutionary. Most movie companies made dozens of movies and hoped to bank on the few that really worked. Instead, Jobs and Pixar decided to create just one movie every year. Focusing the energy of lots of smart people on one project would yield the grea test results, Jobs believed. If you spend the majority of your time on trivial matters, or on things you could easily delegate or outsource, youre not maximizing your value. Its well known that 80 percent of results come from 20 percent of the activities we do. Its good to do an 80/20 analysis and 1) delete or 2) delegate the 80 percent of activities in order to 3) double-down on what truly matters. Then do another 80/20 analysisof the 20 percentyielding your results (0.20 X 0.20 = 0.04). Double-down on that. Focus as much as you can on those things of highestvalue. As you focus on the highest impact activities, you will make enormous progress toward your goals. Thus, not only will you enjoy the ride more, but the ride will also move much faster. Youll get to see more of what you really wanted to see. Time will slow down for you. Conclusion Dont compartmentalize yourlifeOne man cannot do right in one department of life whilst he is occupied in doing wrong in any other department. Life i s one indivisible whole. Mahatma GandhiYour entire life is a context, a system. When you change a part, you simultaneously change the whole. The smallest tweaks could make an enormous difference.Look at your life. How are little decisions holding you back from the experiences you want to have?Make those changes immediately. Continue to improve the contexts all around you and you will increasingly have the experiences youre striving to have. How I Turned $25,000 Into $374,592 In Less Than 6MonthsIve created a free training that will teach you how to become world-class and successful at anything you choose.Access the free trainingherenowThis article first appeared on Medium.

How to Check out a Commercial Landlord

How to Check out a Commercial LandlordHow to Check out a Commercial LandlordLandlords run background checks on potential tenants and ask for references. Most commercial landlords ask for personal financial information in addition to information about your geschftlicher umgang. Because landlords hold the key (literally) to commercial rental properties it is easy to lose sight of the fact that you are really the one in control. You do elend have to sign a lease and a high-pressured attempt to get you to sign a lease on the spot is a good sign you need to walk away. A ?desperate landlord may not have the resources to maintain the property, or not care about the quality of their tenants. A good landlord will look for tenants who will add value to the property by bringing in the right type of business good for other tenants and the surrounding community. Commercial leases are often longer than housing leases, and landlord often ask tenants to sign a three to five-year lease or trick them into a Triple Net Lease. Before you submit an application, it is important that you do your own homework and check up on a potential landlord. A nightmare landlord can ruin business for you in even the best of locations. Consider Talking With A Business Mentor If you are new to business, or planning to sign a lease for more than one year, you might want to talk to a business counselor or mentor to get ideas about finding the right location for your business. There are many services that offer free or low-cost business mentoring to help you make business decisions. A wonderful, free service to try is www.micromentor.org. You fill out a questionnaire and are offered a selection of mentors that match your criteria. Another great resource for established business owners and start-ups is SCORE, a government-sponsored program with local chapters throughout the United States. SCORE offers free information, resources, tools, and low-cost (or free, depending upon your location) seminars to help you start and grow your business successfully. Check Out A Landlords Reputation Contact your local chamber of commerce and ask questions about how well other business owners are doing in the area and if they offer programs to help promote new businesses. Casually mention to property and property owner you are considering and ask if the chamber representative can offer you any insights. If there are local business meetings you can ?attend or a network to join, do so, and ask other business owners if they are familiar with the landlord or management company. Check out the company who owns the building with the Better Business Bureau to see if there are complaints against the owners. However, be sure you check out the company who actually manages the property. Building owners often hire a management company to collect rents, manage and maintain the property, and handle all tenant issues. A landlord will probably charge you an application fee. That fee is used to cover the e xpense of checking out public data available about you and your business including leistungspunkt scores and to see if you have a criminal record. There are many low-cost services online you can use to run the same check on your landlord. Pay Attention- And Bring a Friend Take a friend, business partner, or family member with you when you tour a property. Having a second pair of eyes is important because they may see something you miss in your excitement. If you see a lot of for lease signs it could be the weak economy- but it could also be the signs of a landlord that does not pay attention to the property and other tenants have left for non-economic reasons. Interview Existing Tenants Before signing a leaseor a sublease, you should talk to other tenants in the same building or location that you are considering and ask questions about the landlord. A property might be in a great location, but if you have a schwimmbad landlord it could hurt your business. Questions to ask ot her tenants include Does the landlord fix things quickly?Does the landlord return calls within one day?Has the landlord tried to increase your rent or charge special fees for taxes, roof work, or other improvements? Is the landlord professional and polite to tenants and their customers? As you tour the property and talk with other tenants be observant What are the other tenants like? Are they quiet or noisy?Do they take parking spaces from other tenants? Are they rude to other tenants customers? Checking Up on Landlords and Business Tenants You can also use search engines to check up on your landlord by searching the property name, the landlords name, and the names of other businesses. Search on their names plus the words reviews and complaints. By checking out complaints other tenants nearby you may be able to see if customers have complained about poor lighting, parking problems, bad security, etc.

How you can start writing with clarity and conviction

How you can start writing with clarity and convictionHow you can start writing with clarity and convictionI am genuinely crippled by the fear of everyone finding out that Im an idiot. Cause I am. Im a real idiot. But Im also a junkie for lyrical turns of phrase, even though I dont really know how to use them. I mean Ill totenstill use them but usually at the expense of clarity. For years, insecurity made my writing aimless and obscure. I only started the process of correcting this after discovering something remarkable you can be an idiot and a good writer. Isnt that crazy? It just takes us a couple more seconds of meditation and a pinch more self-control.Mistaking density for sophistication is a symptom of the kind of bad writing that tends to go undetected because its often encouraged by misleading praise. What a lovely metaphor youve used here A flower shackled by the maw of despair. That sounds so cool I mean I still dont understand how bitcoin works but Im probably just dumb. What a striking quote Im not sure what Schopenhauerhas to do with the stock market but man, this author is well-readWhat colorful vocabulary I had to read this article with a dictionary close at hand.I dont thinkexcessivemastication means what the author thinks it does, but boy, whatta sentence I can empathize with the desire to rush the development of voice, but thesaurus writing isnt a shortcut, its a diversion the scenic route has to be earned. A command of the English language isnt evidenced by an itch to employ ten-dollar words nor an eagerness to boast exercises in extravagant anecdotes. A competent writer embraces brevity. Cogency is their master and the words they choose a reflection of such.Of course how you say a thing is just as important as what youre saying, but the former should never be at odds with the latter. On the subject, a colleague of mine summated it as neatly as one couldA strong voice shows a writer comfortable enough with the source material to take risks.Style should be a mark of strong ideas not a smokescreen for soft-under baked ones. Anyway, interesting thoughts dont need much dressing. Voice and clarity are only in conflict when the former is an apology for a lack of understanding. In other words you dont get to play outside until youve finished your homework.Writers reporting on subjects that they arent well-versed in are susceptible to the kind of doubt that invariably leads to witless-cryptic-verbiage. How do I provide validity to a piece penned by a fraud? I know Ill just stuff it with phrases like standing disgrace and words like malapropism. You dont have to ape the parlance of an academician to convey a sense of authority. The fear of coming across like a simpleton is the most obvious feature of one.Why you shouldnt writeWriting that aims to impress is doomed to do just the opposite. Its much more difficult to write plainly. Its a skill Im still working on. As a literature fanboy, I cant write a check without the ghosts of my heroes sneering at my shameful stabs at elegance. It took me a long time to be at peace with the fact that if some miracle of science brought Orwell back from the dead, hemight soon thereafter publish a piece titled Shooting A CW.Hemingway would give me a swirly, Sylvia Plath would go to IKEA,Virginia Woolf would file a cease and desist and Larkin would have just a hair more things to fuel certain opinions of his. Acknowledging those that have influenced you isnt the same as writing with them constantly in mind. If you write to be understood, and not simply to be marveled at this will take care of itself with some practice.Style and Substance as oneWriter and comedian Emily Winer recently made news with a piece she published for the New Yorker entitled I Got Rejected 101 times. In it, she commands the virtues of clarity and voice to work toward a shared goal. Upon reading you immediately get a sense of who the author is as well as what she is trying to convey at that particular point in time.Though Winter acknowledges the craft at work, the gears remain unseen. As an admirer of her attention to word economy both on stage and the page, I was compelled to inquire exactly how much clarity informs her process. She answeredIve scrapped many ideas because I couldnt find the words to make it come alive the way it is in my head. On the other hand, I dont hold onto a joke simply because its a good turn of phrase. This is the most cliche writing adage in the world, but you gotta kill those babies. She concedes A perfectly-constructed joke could ruin a script or essay simply because it doesnt fit tonally. Its important to recognize when thats happening and cut those puppies loose.Fat becomes the enemy of writing that aims to entertain by calling attention to itself. As Winter puts it You dont see a gorgeous dress and admire its seams you see a gorgeous dress and admire it in its entirety. Drawing attention to how its constructed takes away from its overall purpose.Purpose is key. Lets all make an effort to be more mindful in our inspection of words and their purpose. Ill-placed, overabundant, or awkwardly-worded details can weigh a story down, but when done right, its what gives a project its flavor and makes it memorable. she punctuates artfully. When writing professionally or creatively, whether in the hopes of landing a job or contributing pieces for the job you already have, establish clarity as an absolute priority.

6 Great Tips to Launch Your Second Career

6 Great Tips to Launch Your Second Career For many years now, weve watched aculture of alfruchtwein continuous restructuring and contingency work displace the job-for-life. Rather than staying at a single company for most of our careers, today we have an average job length of just over four years. Its not just individual jobs that have come under threat, but entire career paths. We live in an era where entire professions are being supplanted by rapid technological innovationand automation. Not only can we no longer expect a job for life We may not even be able to expect one career for life. Its very likely that most us will have second careers, and some of us may even have third or fourth careers. Despite this fact, much of the career advice one finds on the Internet and elsewhere focuses on how tolaunch your first career. In my opinion, its high time we started talking about how professionals can start their second or third careers. Today, then, I offer six tips on that very subject1. Learn From Your First CareerLaunching a second career means more thansimply doing the exact opposite of your current career. The Top Paying Media Jobs

The Top Paying Media JobsThe Top Paying Media JobsHigh-profile media jobs often can pay salaries well into six figures or more. However, these jobs are the exception to the rule. Media is a broad term, and jobs that fit under that umbrella generally fall into the categories of nachrichten, arts and entertainment, or public relations. The highest paying jobs typically are the ones that take place in the national spotlight or in the largest markets. These jobs are rare, and most opportunities will be found in smaller markets. So, while its possible to sign a multimillion-dollar contract as a network news anchor, top pay for such a position in most markets is going to be closer to $100,000. Editor-in-Chief A person in this position is in charge of the editorial content for a newspaper or magazine or perhaps oversees a book publishing imprint. Bonnie Fuller, who used to head US Weekly and Star Magazine was making a reported $1.5 million in her job at Star, which is not unusual for su ch a high-profile publication based out of a large market like New York or Los Angeles. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the zentralwert salary for editors in 2017 was $58,770 (the most recent available as of January 2019), and only 10 percent of those in the position earned more than about $90,000. So, if youre running a publication in a medium-sized market or larger at something less than a major national publication, its reasonable to expect pay in the neighborhood of six figures. Art Director Like media itself, this covers a broad range of responsibilities, including overseeing the visuals for magazines or book jackets. There also are positions available in arts and entertainment and in various forms of public relations. Its a creative position that requires visualizing how to plan something appealing on a canvas of a specific size, such as posters and book and magazine covers. BLS reports that as of 2017, the median salary for art directors in the motion pi cture and video industries is $112,800. For those in advertising, public relations and other specialized design services, it is $95,000, and for those working for publications, it is about $81,000. Those doing high-profile work in the largest markets can expect to earn significantly more than the reported median salary. Producer Producers who work behind the scenes at major network news shows like Dateline make well into the six figures. In general, television remains a more lucrative medium than print when it comes to salaries, but the title of producer can apply to radio, film, theater, and other industries. In general, anyone who is overseeing productions in any media can be called a producer. Like other industries, those in high-profile roles can make into the millions for producing a major film or a Broadway show. Media salaries, according to BLS, are more modest about $90,000 in public relations, about $87,000 for smaller films, just shy of $60,000 for local radio and tele vision, and the same for performing arts, spectator sports, and other related industries. TV News Anchor When Katie Couric was hired to anchor the CBS Evening News, she signed a contract for $15 million annually, but the number of similar positions available can be counted on your fingers. Most anchor jobs are found on local television news broadcasts, and BLS reports that the median salary for such jobs is around $60,000. The variation from market to market is significant, though. Someone anchoring the local news in Tacoma, Wash., will not be making nearly as much money as someone at the news desk in New York City or Los Angeles. Director of Publicity A senior-level publicity position, likely working in book publishing, can net someone from $70,000 to more than $100,000, according to BLS. Again, the higher salaries come with being in a bigger market and at a bigger imprint.

United debacle When can employees speak up

United debacle When can employees speak upUnited debacle When can employees speak upThe dragging of a bloody doctoroff a United Airlines flight at Chicagos OHare Airport was a customer-relations disaster thatsent the companys stock tumblingand did untold reputational damage to the company. The bizarre incident, which appeared to center around Uniteds rigid policies for dealing with customers, also leads to the questionwhere do employees draw the line between policy and individual judgment? And why were United employees so reluctant to defy the companys official policy? The military roots of the airline industryAndrew Gilman, President and CEO of CommCore Consulting Group, told Ladders about the nature of the flight industry. The airline business has to run on a very command and control structure, much like a military operationIf you dont have that you wont be successful. Gilman added that airlinesneed people to do things on time, follow the rules, and it works 99% of the time. The airlin e industry is, in fact, ruled by checklists that allow very little variation, even for pilots. In his book, The Checklist Manifesto, author Atul Gawande notes that many cockpits hold checklists for what to do when theres a crisis. (The first entry Keep flying the plane. Apparently its common for pilots in panicky situations to take their hands off the controls.)But the focus on checklists and rules doesnt mean its easy. On airlines, just as in the military, rebellion is swiftly punished. The rigid guidelines of the industry dont allow room for flexibility in many personal situations. The harder part of the business or any organization is when and how you can use judgment or other tactics to get the main results, Gilman told Ladders.Gilman also referenced the concept of the Golden Hour, a medical theoryused by R Adams Cowley, MD, of the University of Maryland, which refers to the critical moments for survival following a traumatic injury.Right now, United is still in that emergency res ponse mode. First they have to react, then figure out how to repair reputation- this goes for customers and employees, Gilman told Ladders. So how long could this firestorm continue?Gilman told Ladders that he thinks that for the next month, the customers or passengers might think,What are the chances that Im gonna be asked to be moved? when considering United.Employees tend to favor flexible managementThe way supervisors lead companies impacts how empowered employees feel to speak up. Flexible management and rigid management create two very different work cultures. In rigid cultures, employees feel they cant speak unless they have the title or standing or disagree, which may prevent problems from being flagged.Theres also a historical switch in how we work the rigid management styles of the past, centered on all-powerful bosses, are giving way to flexible, non-hierarchical structures broadly. The Edward Lowe Foundationfoundthat employees in the current workforce crave a mora leisurel y management style, and that the very nature of the workplace and the work to be done demands it, even though old-school management experts reportedly dont favor getting rid of strict rules and letting workers manage themselves. But the textoffered specific advice, including this that may have come in handy at United strike a balance between a strict policy and complete freedom. Be available to those employees who need more guidance than others. Also be sure to give feedback to workers, so they wont feel all their hard work has been performed in vain. The articlealso recommends that managers meet with workers to see how much they like the businesss existing structure, adding that some employees thrive on rules and may be quite pleased with a micromanagement approach. More often than not, however, employees are bound to reply that they wouldnt mind a little more flexibility - more freedom to create their own solutions and perhaps even the ability to decide when and where their work wi ll be done.Applying this to the United Airlines draggingincident the way bosses act probably impacts their responses to emergency situations. The power of positivity at workBeing a good manager can go a long way toward softening a workplace culture and making employees feel more welcome. An 2015 article in the Harvard Business Reviewlist a slew of health problems that can arise from work-related stress- including the fact thatthere is a strong link between leadership behavior and heart disease in employees, according to a large-scale study done by Anna Nyberg at the Karolinska Institute. Stress-producing bosses are literally bad for the heart, the authors wrote. The article gives bosses four tips on how to promote certain workplace positivity principles the authors list foster social connections, show empathy, go out of your way to help and encourage people to talk to you especially about their problems. The general rule is that leadership truly just come from the top, and an understa nding culture may even help employees health.

The Career Mistake That Still Haunts Me

The Career Mistake That Still Haunts MeThe Career Mistake That Still Haunts Me When I welches new to the world of freelancing , it seemed like a feat to simply have my name appear as a byline on an article, regardless of whether or not I welches paid. During my first couple of years, I welches happy to write on my friends blogs just for exposure. So when I finally hit the big time of getting paid $50 per blog article, it seemed like a miracle. I secured one, then two, regular publications and was desperately trying to figure out how to ride my small wave of success into making a living.Despite the fact that I had freelance writing in mind as a career path, I did very little research on the job. I didnt talk to people who were writing the kind of personal blogging I wanted to write. I didnt seek the counsel of those higher up in the freelance ranks to see what kind of mistakes they made early on in their careers. As a result, I ended up making the most embarrassing mistake of my career when I was only a few months in.I felt certain that I had to keep a strong hold on my first two jobs, not yet understanding that they were content mills, which are not usually the best sources of freelance work. In addition to eating up a lot of your time for only a little bit of pay, behauptung places thrive on controversial content and rage-inducing hot takes. My editors would send out absurd pitch lists, which included sexual experiments, unpopular opinion essays, and other sensational fare. By the time I read through the list and volunteered to take the most reasonable sounding essays, I was always too late. So, I started veering into the darker side of the list in order to keep getting work, and I ended up being assigned the worst story of my life.I immediately regretted it when my editor said I had secured the story on staying skinny for your marriage. From the beginning, it didnt sit right with me, and I struggled to find any angle that could possibly make it less horrific. I didnt know that I could just throw the assignment back to the editor, who would find another writing shark to take it. So, I got down to the terrible business of writing the thing I should not be writing.I drew on personal insecurities from my past and wrote a half-hearted, awful monstrosity on how staying fit benefits my marriage. It didnt matter how careful I tried to be with my words. There was no way around the misogynistic , self-hating, fat-shaming garbage that was inherent in the very premise. It had no depth whatsoever, and I was thoroughly ashamed of it.Luckily, freelance life moved along quickly, and I soon became part of an online writing community that helped guide me away from the morally repugnant content mill and toward the heartfelt, truthful essay writing I was longing for. However, a few months later, the dreaded skinny essay hit the internet, and though I tried to hide it under a bushel, it went viral quickly. The article was shared thousands of times, and it drew sharp criticism and hate wherever it roamed. Then, it was shared in my shiny new corner of the internet where all of the freelancers whom I had been learning from could see it.Both the article and I were torn to shreds. Counter essays were written to refute my every word. A couple of new editors I had begun working with unceremoniously dropped me to distance their publications from my embarrassing reputation . I thought my writing career might be over.Yet, though some of the comments in my writing group were pure vitriol, there were many other writers who gently pointed out exactly where I had misstepped so I would never make the same mistakes again. It was a difficult, but necessary, learning experience. I became more careful about taking assignments. I found more reputable publications to work with. I stopped immediately responding to pitch lists.Over the next six months, the skinny essay reared its ugly head a couple more times, but I kept my head down, bu ilding back my reputation by doing solid work. I didnt read the comments. I didnt try to absolve myself, as badly as I wanted to. I simply held myself to a higher standard of work until my greatest career embarrassment was eventually crushed beneath the weight of a much more respectable portfolio .I wish I had been wise enough to seek the counsel of other freelancers from the very beginning, but at least I found some help early on - before I made a name for myself as a salacious trash writer. Because of their advice, I was able to bounce back from my painful career blunder and find work I could proudly put my byline on. I know I will still make mistakes, but I also know that others in my community will be willing to help me learn from and move past my errors. That gives me tremendous confidence in the future of my career. This article was originally published on DailyWorth . It is reprinted with permission.
